How to Choose a Cool Username for Your Online Dating Profile
Although your username alone might not get you to meet the man or the woman of your dreams, having a catchy username for your dating profile that says that you are not just another boring, average Joe, or a female version thereof, is a good idea. Here are a three, simple practical tips on how to choose an intriguing username and just as importantly – how to make sure your username doesn’t make your profile less attractive:
1. Make Sure That Your Profile Username Doesn’t Reduce You to a Certain Interest or Hobby
I am not a fan of usernames that suggest that all there is to you is a certain hobby or a certain interest that you like to engage. This is why I would suggest that you avoid such usernames as “NYCrunner” or “photographyjunkie” or “scubadiver75″, or “mathteacher101″. As fascinating as the underlying activity is, when you make it sound like your life revolves around it, it automatically makes you sound less interesting to many, if not most, of the readers of your profile.
2. Don’t Be Afraid to Use an Abstract Term for your Username
Such usernames as “primitivelogic”, “invinitehorizon”, “originunknown” “appletart”, or “3_olives” or any other abstract words that come from astronomy, biology, geography, philosophy or even the kitchen might not be the most intriguing usernames out there, but they also doesn’t hurt your profile and don’t make you sound lame. A somewhat unclear or mysterious username would also make the reader of your profile want to find out why you chose that kind of username. This makes is all the easier for them to start talking to you. Instead of struggling with how to start talking to you online, they can just begin by asking you what the story is behind your username. After all, they are not used to seeing usernames like that, among all the “travelbug”‘s “JennyRN”s, and “AdventurousSteve”‘s, “SexyLexi”s, and “SmoovPlaya’s”.
3. The Best Usernames Are The Ones That Convey Your Playful Sarcasm and Wit
Not everyone has a skill for coming up with sharp and witty usernames. However, as you watch comedies, or listen to comedians, or read a funny/interesting articles, keep your ears open to hear anything that might inspire you to come up with a great, catchy username. Spend some time to do a little research. Look at other usernames on different dating profiles. See which ones you like and which ones you think are bad, and that will help you figure out a better username for yourself. I don’t suggest you plagiarise, but there is nothing wrong from getting inspiration from the other profiles’ usernames. A few that stood out for me were: “ addtoshoppingcart “, “ihatefoodies”, “ piratehooker “, “ notadinnerwhore “, “ virgin-mary “, and “sugarfreedaddy”.

Dating Profile Usernames: Do They Matter?
With women, details matter. When a man walks into a room with a confident gate and suggestive eye contact, he may peak a woman’s interest.
…And she will do this immediately:
She will size him up to figure out whether or not he “fits the bill”. She will look for any flaws that may indicate he is faking, or that he is not the man he is pretending to be.
If she scans this man from afar, and she notices, for example, that his nails are well manicured, and his shoes are elegantly selected to match his decor, she may assume that this man takes lots of pride in himself, and that he has an acute sense of fashion. She may also think that he probably has high self-esteem, he’s socially intelligent, and, as a result, he probably has high social status…
… ALL that from a clean set of fingernails and some nice shoes…
Having a good online dating username can have the same subtle effect with women.
Just like the example above, a good username can reveal an entire menu of good qualities about you, and a bad one can destroy your chances with her before she even has the chance to know who you really are…
A profile username can’t get you a date by itself, just like a manicured hand won’t get you a date by itself.
But when a man walks into the room…
Confident gate… suggestive eye contact… AND he’s got nice hands and feet… this combination creates a deeper level of meaning to a woman in that context.
Although a pair of nice shoes will NEVER get you a girlfriend by itself, a pair of old, hideous ones can kill your chances with a woman.
I’d be exaggerating if I said that your username was critically important to getting a date. It’s not… BUT it does always need to pass the test of not sucking.
When you have a username that makes you look bad or shows that you completely lack brains and creativity, it will be damaging to your response rate from women.
A Bad Username Can Hurt…
Most men don’t pay attention to details like this; so most usernames typically have the same boring, unoriginal ring to them…
Here’s a typical username: Pittguy78
In this example, it’s obvious that the user is probably from Pittsburg, and he was probably born in 1978…
Yawn…
This lets a woman know instantly that you are not creative, and you’re probably very lazy…
As soon as she sees this kind of screen name, a woman will immediately begin to put you in the category that she’d never date: the “just like every other loser” category…
A good username keeps the online dating process running smoothly…
At best, it will work to “pre sell” a woman on your attractive qualities. At the least, you won’t get disqualified by a woman…
If you can show off your best talent, convey a sharp sense of humor, or communicate mystery, fantasy, adventure, paradise, or some sort curious contradiction in your username, you will be off to a solid start with attracting more women online.
On a final note, the quest to find the perfect username that women find irresistible is ultimately can be inefficient way to spend your time. That’s because even though a great username can help your response rate from women, a username has much more potential to “break” you by being bad than it does to “make” you by being good.
What will “make” you is an awesome profile description, so if you can’t think of the username of the century, don’t sweat it. Good enough is good enough…
Great Usernames are Usually Puns or Plays on Words
As someone who has been an online dating coach since 2003, I’d venture to guess that I’ve not only seen more usernames than just about anyone on the planet, but I’ve written more of them as well.
Why do I think that usernames make a difference, when everyone knows that it’s all about the profile and photo?
Because when you’re dating online, which is an extremely competitive medium, you need every advantage you can get.
A great username is a differentiator – a unique brand name – something that completely sets you apart from every other person on a dating site. And when your ideal partner is scrolling through hundreds of names – Sally102, JenNYC1, LawyerGal – a great username can be the very reason that someone contacts you.
Most people take one of two wrong tacks when coming up with an online dating username:
1) Putting ZERO thought into it: Bill10247, ClaireT, AllyCat
2) Putting minimal thought into it, using a literal description: TallDoctor, GorgeousGoddess, Fun2BeAround
The problem with these efforts, of course, is not that they’re “bad”, but rather that they’re BORING. There’s nothing unique, memorable or distinguishing. There’s nothing that evokes a smile. And so the names fall flat. And you become convinced that usernames don’t matter.
They do if you are clever about it.
In my opinion, a username should be a pun or a play on words. Something familiar-sounding, with a twist.
WineNot – for the wine aficionado
LadyGoGo – for the world traveler
BachToBach – for the classical music enthusiast
TenderLegal – for the soft-hearted lawyer
See the common thread? All of them are plays off of real names, idioms or catchphrases, which is why they evoke smiles from readers.
One of my favorite usernames was TheGooseWhisperer, written for a client named Bobbi in 2005. Bobbi had a farm with geese in the yard and instead of using TheHorseWhisperer, which was way too overdone, we changed one word to great effect. Dozens of people commented on it.
One of them turned out to be her future husband.
So if you’re wondering how to come up with a clever name that gets attention, and attracts a like-minded person with a great sense of humor, I have an exercise that can help you come up with usernames just like the ones I mention above.
It’s in Volume 2 of my Finding the One Online audio series, and is the cherry on top of your new online dating experience. In Finding the One Online, I give you 7 hours of audio, a 180 page transcript, a 35 page workbook – and tips on everything from choosing the right site, to writing a compelling online dating profile, to taking the right photos, to flirting effectively via email so that every single person will want to meet you in person.
What’s the most memorable username you’ve ever seen on a dating site? I’m quite sure our readers are not going to copy them for their own personal usage. Right, readers?
Dating
Dating is a part of human mating process whereby two people meet socially for companionship. beyond the level of friendship. or with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or marriage. It can be a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by the couple. While the term has several meanings, it usually refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity in public, together, as a couple.
History [ edit ]
Dating as an institution is a relatively recent phenomenon which has mainly emerged in the last few centuries. From the standpoint of anthropology and sociology. dating is linked with other institutions such as marriage and the family which have also been changing rapidly and which have been subject to many forces, including advances in technology and medicine. As humans have evolved from hunter-gatherers into civilized societies and more recently into modern societies, there have been substantial changes in the relationship between men and women, with perhaps the only biological constant being that both adult women and men must have sexual intercourse for human procreation to happen. [ 3 ]
Humans have been compared to other species in terms of sexual behavior. Neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky constructed a reproductive spectrum with opposite poles being tournament species. in which males compete fiercely for reproductive privileges with females, and pair bond arrangements, in which a male and female will bond for life. [ 4 ] According to Sapolsky, humans are somewhat in the middle of this spectrum, in the sense that humans form pair bonds, but there is the possibility of cheating or changing partners. [ 4 ] These species-particular behavior patterns provide a context for aspects of human reproduction. including dating. However, one particularity of the human species is that pair bonds are often formed without necessarily having the intention of reproduction. In modern times, emphasis on the institution of marriage, generally described as a male-female bond, has obscured pair bonds formed by same-sex and transsexual couples, and that many heterosexual couples also bond for life without offspring, or that often pairs that do have offspring separate. Thus, the concept of marriage is changing widely in many countries.
Historically, marriages in most societies were arranged by parents and older relatives with the goal not being love but legacy and "economic stability and political alliances", according to anthropologists. [ 5 ] Accordingly, there was little need for a temporary trial period such as dating before a permanent community-recognized union was formed between a man and a woman. While pair-bonds of varying forms were recognized by most societies as acceptable social arrangements, marriage was reserved for heterosexual pairings and had a transactional nature, where wives were in many cases a form of property being exchanged between father and husband, and who would have to serve the function of reproduction. Communities exerted pressure on people to form pair-bonds in places such as Europe ; in China. according to sociologist Tang Can, society "demanded people get married before having a sexual relationship" [ 6 ] and many societies found that some formally recognized bond between a man and a woman was the best way of rearing and educating children as well as helping to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings regarding competition for mates.
