Online dating service

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Online dating ( OD ) or Internet dating is a personal introductory system whereby individuals can find and contact each other over the Internet to arrange a date. usually with the objective of developing a personal, romantic, or sexual relationship. Online dating services usually provide unmoderated matchmaking over the Internet. through the use of personal computers or cell phones. Users of an online dating service would usually provide personal information, to enable them to search the service provider's database for other individuals. Members use criteria other members set, such as age range, gender and location.

Online dating sites use market metaphors to match people. Match Metaphors are conceptual frameworks that allow individuals to make sense of new concepts by drawing upon familiar experiences and frame-works. This metaphor of the marketplace – a place where people go to “shop” for potential romantic partners and to “sell” themselves in hopes of creating a successful romantic relationship – is highlighted by the layout and functionality of online dating websites. The marketplace metaphor may also resonate with participants’ conceptual orientation towards the process of? nding a romantic partner. [ 1 ] Most sites allow members to upload photos or videos of themselves and browse the photos and videos of others. Sites may offer additional services, such as webcasts. online chat. telephone chat (VOIP ), and message boards. Some sites provide free registration, but may offer services which require a monthly fee. Other sites depend on advertising for their revenue. Some sites such as OKCupid, Plenty of Fish and Badoo are free and offer additional paid services in a freemium revenue model. [ 2 ]

Some sites are broad-based, with members coming from a variety of backgrounds looking for different types of relationships. Other sites are more specific, based on the type of members, interests, location, or relationship desired. A 2005 study of data collected by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that individuals are more likely to use an online dating service if they use the internet for a greater amount of tasks and less likely to use such a service if they are trusting of others. Dealing with Rejection

Have you ever been rejected by someone you really liked? Maybe you tried to talk to someone you had a crush on, and they totally ignored you. Maybe you asked out that cutie from chemistry, and they said no. You probably felt disappointed, embarrassed, sad, upset, or maybe a little angry.

We get it - rejection’s not fun, so how do you deal with it?

First of all, understand that rejection is a part of life

It’s a sucky part of life, but rejection happens to all of us at some point, whether it’s being told no for a job, a scholarship, acceptance to college, or a date with a certain person. It can be really difficult not to take “no” personally. But part of dating is opening yourself up to someone else, and with that comes the possibility that they may not respond the way you want them to. Just remember that your whole self-worth doesn’t have to be wrapped up in whether or not someone wants to date you - there’s so much more to you than who you’re dating! And while rejection might sting at first, it also allows other opportunities to come into our lives, and maybe that can (eventually) be a good thing.

Accept how you feel

Like we said before, you might feel disappointed or upset after being told no. These feelings are normal and you can definitely work through them! First, it’s important to just acknowledge and accept how you feel. You could try saying to yourself: “Hey, this really sucks, and I’m [sad, hurt, angry]. But it’s going to be okay.” Keep in mind, rejection can trigger a lot of unhealthy feelings and behaviors, so check in with yourself: are you acting out? are your feelings starting to get a little out of control? are you building things up in your mind that aren’t true? If so, it could help to journal about your feelings. or talk to a friend, family member, or counselor you trust. You could also call, chat or text with a loveisrespect peer advocate.

Be respectful of the other person’s decision and feelings

So you asked someone out and they said no. Ouch. We know it hurts, but yelling at them, stalking them, or trying to coerce or intimidate them into dating you after they’ve said no are considered unhealthy or even abusive behaviors. The healthy response is to respect their decision. No one owes anyone their affections, and everyone has the right to decide who they will and won’t date. Even if you think you’d be perfect for each other, if the other person doesn’t feel the same way, they have a right to their feelings.

Focus on stuff that you enjoy

You might want to take a step back from the situation and just focus on yourself for a while. Hang out with friends, watch movies, listen to music, learn a new skill - anything that interests you and that you find fun. This is helpful because it reminds you that you have your own life and lots of other great things going on! And hey, even though one person said no, that doesn’t mean you’ll never find someone else who says yes.

If you’ve got dating questions and need to talk to someone, our peer advocates are here to listen and support you. Call, chat, or text with us 24/7!

Radiometric dating

Radiometric dating (often called radioactive dating ) is a technique used to date materials such as rocks or carbon, usually based on a comparison between the observed abundance of a naturally occurring radioactive isotope and its decay products, using known decay rates. [ 1 ] The use of radiometric dating was first published in 1907 by Bertram Boltwood [ 2 ] and is now the principal source of information about the absolute age of rocks and other geological features, including the age of the Earth itself, and can be used to date a wide range of natural and man-made materials. Together with stratigraphic principles. radiometric dating methods are used in geochronology to establish the geological time scale. [ 3 ] Among the best-known techniques are radiocarbon dating. potassium-argon dating and uranium-lead dating. By allowing the establishment of geological timescales, it provides a significant source of information about the ages of fossils and the deduced rates of evolutionary change. Radiometric dating is also used to date archaeological materials, including ancient artifacts.

Different methods of radiometric dating vary in the timescale over which they are accurate and the materials to which they can be applied.

Radioactive decay [ edit ]

Example of a radioactive decay chain from lead-212 ( 212 Pb) to lead-208 ( 208 Pb). Each parent nuclide spontaneously decays into a daughter nuclide (the decay product ) via an ? decay or a ? ? decay. The final decay product, lead-208 ( 208 Pb), is stable and can no longer undergo spontaneous radioactive decay.

All ordinary matter is made up of combinations of chemical elements. each with its own atomic number. indicating the number of protons in the atomic nucleus. Additionally, elements may exist in different isotopes. with each isotope of an element differing in the number of neutrons in the nucleus. A particular isotope of a particular element is called a nuclide. Some nuclides are inherently unstable. That is, at some point in time, an atom of such a nuclide will undergo radioactive decay and spontaneously transform into a different nuclide. This transformation may be accomplished in a number of different ways, including alpha decay (emission of alpha particles ) and beta decay (electron emission, positron emission, or electron capture ). Another possibility is spontaneous fission into two or more nuclides.

For most radioactive nuclides, the half-life depends solely on nuclear properties and is essentially a constant. It is not affected by external factors such as temperature. pressure. chemical environment, or presence of a magnetic or electric field. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] The only exceptions are nuclides that decay by the process of electron capture. such as beryllium-7. strontium-85. and zirconium-89. whose decay rate may be affected by local electron density. For all other nuclides, the proportion of the original nuclide to its decay products changes in a predictable way as the original nuclide decays over time. This predictability allows the relative abundances of related nuclides to be used as a clock to measure the time from the incorporation of the original nuclides into a material to the present.

Radiocarbon dating

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radiocarbon dating is a method of determining the age of an object by using the properties of radiocarbon. a radioactive isotope of carbon. The method was invented by Willard Libby in the late 1940s and soon became a standard tool for archaeologists. It depends on the fact that radiocarbon, often abbreviated as 14

C. is constantly being created in the atmosphere by the interaction of cosmic rays with atmospheric nitrogen. The resulting radiocarbon combines with atmospheric oxygen to form radioactive carbon dioxide. This is then incorporated into plants by photosynthesis. and animals acquire 14

C by eating the plants. When the animal or plant dies, it stops exchanging carbon with its environment, and from that point the amount of 14

C it contains begins to reduce as the 14

C undergoes radioactive decay. Measuring the amount of 14

C in a sample from a dead plant or animal such as piece of old wood or a fragment of bone provides information that can be used to calculate when the animal or plant died. The oldest dates that can be reliably measured by radiocarbon dating are around 50,000 years ago, though special preparation methods occasionally permit dating of older samples.

While the idea behind radiocarbon dating is straightforward, years of additional work were required to develop the technique to the point where accurate dates could be obtained. Research has been going on since the 1960s to determine what the proportion of 14

C in the atmosphere has been over the past fifty thousand years. The resulting data, in the form of a calibration curve, is now used to convert a given measurement of radiocarbon in a sample into an estimate of the sample's actual calendar age. In addition to this curve, other corrections must be made to account for different proportions of 14

C in different types of organism (fractionation) and different 14

C levels in different parts of the biosphere (reservoir effects).

Measurement of radiocarbon was originally done by beta-counting devices, so called because they counted the amount of beta radiation emitted by decaying 14

C atoms in a sample. More recently, accelerator mass spectrometry has become the method of choice; it can be used with much smaller samples (as small as individual plant seeds), and gives results much more quickly.

The development of radiocarbon dating has had a profound impact on archaeology. In addition to permitting more accurate dating within archaeological sites than did methods previously in use, it also allows comparison of dates of events across great distances. Histories of archaeology often refer to the early impact of the new method as the “radiocarbon revolution”. Occasionally, the method is used for items of popular interest such as the Shroud of Turin. which is claimed to show an image of the body of Jesus Christ. A sample of linen from the shroud was tested in 1988 and found to date from the 1200s or 1300s, casting doubt on its authenticity.

Background [ edit ]

History [ edit ]

In the early 1930s Willard Libby was a chemistry student at the University of Berkeley. receiving his Ph. D. in 1933. He remained there as an instructor until the end of the decade. In 1939 the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley began experiments to determine if any of the elements common in organic matter had isotopes with half-lives long enough to be of value in biomedical research. It was soon discovered that 14

C 's half-life was far longer than had been previously thought, and in 1940 this was followed by proof that the interaction of slow neutrons with 14

N was the main pathway by which 14

C was created. It had previously been thought 14

C would be more likely to be created by deuterons interacting with 13

C. At about this time Libby read a paper by W. E. Danforth and S. A. Korff, published in 1939, which predicted the creation of 14

C in the atmosphere by neutrons from cosmic rays which had been slowed down by collisions with molecules of atmospheric gas. It was this paper that first gave Libby the idea that radiocarbon dating might be possible. [ 1 ]

In 1945, Libby moved to the University of Chicago. He published a paper in 1946 in which he proposed that the carbon in living matter might include 14

C as well as non-radioactive carbon. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Libby and several collaborators proceeded to experiment with methane collected from sewage works in Baltimore, and after isotopically enriching their samples they were able to demonstrate that they contained radioactive 14

C. By contrast, methane created from petroleum had no radiocarbon activity. The results were summarized in a paper in Science in 1947, and the authors commented that their results implied it would be possible to date materials containing carbon of organic origin. [ 2 ] [ 4 ]

Libby and James Arnold proceeded to experiment with samples of wood of known age. For example, two wood samples taken from the tombs of two Egyptian kings, Zoser and Sneferu. independently dated to 2625 BC plus or minus 75 years, were dated by radiocarbon measurement to an average of 2800 BC plus or minus 250 years. These results were published in Science in 1949. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] In 1960, Libby was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. [ 2 ]

Physical and chemical details [ edit ]

In nature, carbon exists as two stable, nonradioactive isotopes. carbon-12 ( 12

C ), and a radioactive isotope, carbon-14 ( 14

C ), also known as "radiocarbon". The half-life of 14

C (the time it takes for half of a given amount of 14

C to decay ) is about 5,730 years, so its concentration in the atmosphere might be expected to reduce over thousands of years. However, 14

C is constantly being produced in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere by cosmic rays. which generate neutrons that in turn create 14

C when they strike nitrogen-14 ( 14

N ) atoms. [ 2 ] The 14

C creation process is described by the following nuclear reaction :

Once produced, the 14

C quickly combines with the oxygen in the atmosphere to form carbon dioxide ( CO

2 ). Carbon dioxide produced in this way diffuses in the atmosphere, is dissolved in the ocean, and is taken up by plants via photosynthesis. Animals eat the plants, and ultimately the radiocarbon is distributed throughout the biosphere. The ratio of 14

Principles [ edit ]

During its life, a plant or animal is exchanging carbon with its surroundings, so the carbon it contains will have the same proportion of 14

C as the biosphere and the carbon exchange reservoir. Once it dies, it ceases to acquire 14

C. but the 14

C within its biological material at that time will continue to decay, and so the ratio of 14

C to 12

C in its remains will gradually reduce. Because 14

C decays at a known rate, the proportion of radiocarbon can be used to determine how long it has been since a given sample stopped exchanging carbon—the older the sample, the less 14

C will be left. [ 8 ]

The equation governing the decay of a radioactive isotope is: [ 2 ]

where N 0 is the number of atoms of the isotope in the original sample (at time t = 0, when the organism from which the sample was taken died), and N is the number of atoms left after time t . [ 2 ] ? is a constant that depends on the particular isotope; for a given isotope it is equal to the reciprocal of the mean-life — i. e. the average or expected time a given atom will survive before undergoing radioactive decay. [ 2 ] The mean-life, denoted by ? . of 14

C is 8,267 years, so the equation above can be rewritten as: [ 11 ]

The sample is assumed to have originally had the same 14

C / 12

C ratio as the ratio in the biosphere, and since the size of the sample is known, the total number of atoms in the sample can be calculated, yielding N 0 . the number of 14

C atoms in the original sample. Measurement of N . the number of 14

C atoms currently in the sample, allows the calculation of t . the age of the sample, using the equation above. [ 8 ]

The half-life of a radioactive isotope (the time it takes for half of the sample to decay, usually denoted by t 1/2 ) is a more familiar concept than the mean-life, so although the equations above are expressed in terms of the mean-life, it is more usual to quote the value of 14

C 's half-life than its mean-life. [ note 1 ] The currently accepted value for the half-life of 14

C is 5,730 years. [ 2 ] This means that after 5,730 years, only half of the initial 14

C will have remained; a quarter will have remained after 11,460 years; an eighth after 17,190 years; and so on.

The above calculations make several assumptions, such as that the level of 14

C in the biosphere has remained constant over time. [ 2 ] In fact, the level of 14

C in the biosphere has varied significantly and as a result the values provided by the equation above have to be corrected by using data from other sources in the form of a calibration curve, which is described in more detail below. [ 12 ] For over a decade after Libby's initial work, the accepted value of the half-life for 14

C was 5,568 years; this was improved in the early 1960s to 5,730 years, which meant that many calculated dates in published papers were now incorrect (the error is about 3%). However, it is possible to incorporate a correction for the half-life value into the calibration curve, and so it has become standard practice to quote measured radiocarbon dates in "radiocarbon years", meaning that the dates are calculated using Libby's half-life value and have not been calibrated. [ 13 ] [ note 2 ] This approach has the advantage of maintaining consistency with the early papers, and also avoids the risk of a double correction for the Libby half-life value. [ 15 ]

Carbon exchange reservoir [ edit ]

Simplified version of the carbon exchange reservoir, showing proportions of carbon and relative activity of the 14

The different elements of the carbon exchange reservoir vary in how much carbon they store, and in how long it takes for the 14

C generated by cosmic rays to fully mix with them. [ 2 ] The atmosphere, which is where 14

C is generated, contains about 1.9% of the total carbon in the reservoirs, and the 14

C it contains mixes in less than seven years. [ 16 ] [ 17 ] The ratio of 14

C to 12

C in the atmosphere is taken as the baseline for the other reservoirs: if another reservoir has a lower ratio of 14

C to 12

C. it indicates that the carbon is older and hence that some of the 14

C has decayed. [ 12 ] The ocean surface is an example: it contains 2.4% of the carbon in the exchange reservoir, [ 16 ] but there is only about 95% as much 14

C as would be expected if the ratio were the same as in the atmosphere. [ 2 ] The time it takes for carbon from the atmosphere to mix with the surface ocean is only a few years, [ 18 ] but the surface waters also receive water from the deep ocean, which has over 90% of the carbon in the reservoir. [ 12 ] Water in the deep ocean takes about 1,000 years to circulate back through surface waters, and so the surface waters contain a combination of older water, with depleted 14

C. and water recently at the surface, with 14

C in equilibrium with the atmosphere. [ 12 ]

Creatures living at the ocean surface have the same 14

C ratios as the water they live in, and as a result of the reduced 14

C / 12

C ratio, the radiocarbon age of marine life is typically about 400 years. [ 19 ] [ note 4 ] Organisms on land, however, are in closer equilibrium with the atmosphere and have the same 14

C / 12

C ratio as the atmosphere. [ 2 ] These organisms contain about 1.3% of the carbon in the reservoir; sea organisms have a mass of less than 1% of those on land and are not shown on the diagram. [ 16 ] Accumulated dead organic matter, of both plants and animals, exceeds the mass of the biosphere by a factor of nearly 3, and since this matter is no longer exchanging carbon with its environment, it has a 14

C / 12

Dating considerations [ edit ]

The variation in the 14

C / 12

C ratio in different parts of the carbon exchange reservoir means that a straightforward calculation of the age of a sample based on the amount of 14

C it contains will often give an incorrect result. There are several other possible sources of error that need to be considered. The errors are of four general types:

variations in the 14

C / 12

C ratio in the atmosphere, both geographically and over time;

isotopic fractionation;

variations in the 14

C / 12

C ratio in different parts of the reservoir;

contamination.

Atmospheric variation [ edit ]

In the early years of using the technique, it was understood that it depended on the atmospheric 14

C / 12

C ratio having remained the same over the preceding few thousand years. To verify the accuracy of the method, several artefacts that were datable by other techniques were tested; the results of the testing were in reasonable agreement with the true ages of the objects. However, in 1958, Hessel de Vries was able to demonstrate that the 14

C / 12

C ratio had changed over time by testing wood samples of known ages and showing there was a significant deviation from the expected ratio. This discrepancy, often called the de Vries effect, was resolved by the study of tree rings. [ 20 ] [ 21 ] Comparison of overlapping series of tree rings allowed the construction of a continuous sequence of tree-ring data that spanned 8,000 years. [ 20 ] (Since that time the tree-ring data series has been extended to 13,900 years.) [ 22 ] Carbon-dating the wood from the tree rings themselves provided the check needed on the atmospheric 14

C / 12

C ratio: with a sample of known date, and a measurement of the value of N (the number of atoms of 14

C remaining in the sample), the carbon-dating equation allows the calculation of N 0 – the number of atoms of 14

C in the sample at the time the tree ring was formed – and hence the 14

C / 12

C ratio in the atmosphere at that time. [ 20 ] Armed with the results of carbon-dating the tree rings, it became possible to construct calibration curves designed to correct the errors caused by the variation over time in the 14

C / 12

C ratio. [ 23 ] These curves are described in more detail below .

Atmospheric 14

C. New Zealand [ 24 ] and Austria. [ 25 ] The New Zealand curve is representative of the Southern Hemisphere; the Austrian curve is representative of the Northern Hemisphere. Atmospheric nuclear weapon tests almost doubled the concentration of 14

C in the Northern Hemisphere. [ 9 ] The date that the Partial Test Ban Treaty (PTBT) went into effect is marked on the graph.

Coal and oil began to be burned in large quantities during the 1800s. Both coal and oil are sufficiently old that they contain little detectable 14

C and, as a result, the CO

2 released substantially diluted the atmospheric 14

C / 12

C ratio. Dating an object from the early 20th century hence gives an apparent date older than the true date. For the same reason, 14

C concentrations in the neighbourhood of large cities are lower than the atmospheric average. This fossil fuel effect (also known as the Suess effect, after Hans Suess. who first reported it in 1955) would only amount to a reduction of 0.2% in 14

C activity if the additional carbon from fossil fuels were distributed throughout the carbon exchange reservoir, but because of the long delay in mixing with the deep ocean, the actual effect is a 3% reduction. [ 20 ] [ 26 ]

A much larger effect comes from above-ground nuclear testing, which released large numbers of neutrons and created 14

C. From about 1950 until 1963, when atmospheric nuclear testing was banned, it is estimated that several tonnes of 14

C were created. If all this extra 14

C had immediately been spread across the entire carbon exchange reservoir, it would have led to an increase in the 14

C / 12

C ratio of only a few per cent, but the immediate effect was to almost double the amount of 14

C in the atmosphere, with the peak level occurring in about 1965. The level has since dropped, as the "bomb carbon" (as it is sometimes called) percolates into the rest of the reservoir. [ 20 ] [ 26 ] [ 27 ]

Isotopic fractionation [ edit ]

Photosynthesis is the primary process by which carbon moves from the atmosphere into living things. In both photosynthetic pathways (C3 and C4 ) 12

C is absorbed slightly more easily than 13

C. which in turn is more easily absorbed than 14

C ratios in plants that differ from the ratios in the atmosphere. This effect is known as isotopic fractionation. [ 28 ] [ 29 ]

To determine the degree of fractionation that takes place in a given plant, the amounts of both 12

C and 13

C isotopes are measured, and the resulting 13

C / 12

C ratio is then compared to a standard ratio known as PDB. [ note 5 ] The 13

C / 12

C ratio is used instead of 14

C / 12

C because the former is much easier to measure, and the latter can be easily derived: the depletion of 13

C relative to 12

C is proportional to the difference in the atomic masses of the two isotopes, so the depletion for 14

C is twice the depletion of 13

C. [ 12 ] The fractionation of 13

C. known as ? 13 C. is calculated as follows: [ 28 ]

where the ‰ sign indicates parts per thousand. [ 28 ] Because the PDB standard contains an unusually high proportion of 13

C. [ note 6 ] most measured ? 13 C values are negative.

Plot [ edit ]

In an enchanted forest, a unicorn learns she is the last of her kind; a butterfly reveals that a demonic animal called the Red Bull herded her kind to the ends of the earth. Venturing into unfamiliar territory beyond the safety of her home, the Unicorn journeys to find them and bring them back.

The Unicorn is captured by the witch Mommy Fortuna, and is put on display in the witch's Midnight Carnival. She makes friends with Schmendrick, an incompetent magician under the services of Mommy Fortuna. While most of the attractions are normal animals with a spell of illusion placed on them (like a Manticore being a toothless lion, a Satyr being a crippled chimpanzee, and the "Midgard Serpent " being a mere snake ), Fortuna has also captured the immortal harpy Celaeno as well. With the help of Schmendrick, the Unicorn escapes, and in the process frees Celaeno, who kills Fortuna and her henchman Ruhk. The Unicorn and the wizard later gain a second traveling companion, Molly Grue, the careworn lover of bandit leader Captain Cully.

When the Unicorn nears the seaside castle of King Haggard, supposed keeper of the Red Bull, she encounters the animal, which turns out to be a monstrous fire elemental. At the last moment before her capture, Schmendrick's unpredictable magic transforms her into a human woman with white knee-length hair. In this guise the Red Bull is uninterested in her and departs. The Unicorn suffers tremendous shock at the feeling of mortality in her body. While Molly wraps the Unicorn's human form in a blanket, Schmendrick states that the magic chose the form and not he and promises that he will return her to normal after the quest is complete.

Schmendrick, Molly Grue and the now-human Unicorn proceed to King Haggard's castle. Haggard is at first unwelcoming, and Schmendrick introduces the Unicorn as his niece, Lady Amalthea. Schmendrick requests that the three of them stay there as members of Haggard's court, only to be told that the only occupants of the castle are Haggard, his adopted son Prince Lir and four ancient men-at-arms. Haggard consents to lodging the trio, replacing his more competent on-call wizard, Mabruk, with Schmendrick, and setting Molly Grue to work in his scullery .

Amalthea begins to forget her identity and her reasons for coming to the castle, and falls in love with Prince Lir. Caught in her newfound emotions, she struggles with thoughts of abandoning her quest for the sake of mortal love. Haggard confronts Amalthea in private conversation, hinting at the location of the unicorns, yet from the waning magic in her eyes, he has doubts regarding his previous suspicions that she is more than she seems. Molly learns the location of the Red Bull's lair from a talking cat.

Molly, Schmendrick and Amalthea are joined by Lir as they enter the bull's den. Schmendrick reveals Amalthea's true identity to Lir after explaining what they are looking for. Lir is unmoved and says that he loves her anyway. This makes Amalthea want to abandon the quest and marry Lir, but Lir dissuades her. The Red Bull appears, but is no longer deceived by Amalthea's human form and chases after her. As Lir struggles to protect her, Schmendrick turns Amalthea back into the Unicorn, but she is unwilling to leave Lir's side. The Bull drives her toward the ocean, just as he earlier drove all the other unicorns, but she manages to run away and the Red Bull gives chase. Lir tries to defend her, but is killed by the bull. Enraged, the Unicorn turns on the Bull and forces him into the sea. Carried on the white surf of incoming tides, the other unicorns emerge en masse from the water, causing Haggard's castle to collapse into the sea as they rush past, with Haggard falling to his death.

On the beach, the Unicorn magically revives Lir before departing for her forest. Schmendrick assures Lir that he has gained much by winning the love of a unicorn, even if he is now alone. The Unicorn briefly returns to say goodbye to Schmendrick, who laments that he has done her wrong by burdening her with regret and the taint of mortality. She disagrees and thanks him for having helped to restore unicorns to the world; though she is the only unicorn to feel regret, she is also the only unicorn to know love. Schmendrick and Molly watch the Unicorn depart for her home in the woods.

Cast [ edit ]

Mia Farrow as the Unicorn / Lady Amalthea, the titular "last unicorn" who, in her search for the other unicorns, is transformed into a young woman and learns about regret and love.

Alan Arkin as Schmendrick, a magician who accompanies the Unicorn on her quest to find others like her. Beagle commented that he was a bit "disappointed" by the way Alan Arkin approached the character because it seemed "too flat". [ 3 ]

Jeff Bridges as Prince Lir, King Haggard's adopted son who falls in love with Lady Amalthea. Although he is later told by Schmendrick that she is a unicorn, his feelings for her remain.

Tammy Grimes as Molly Grue, the love of Captain Cully who joins Schmendrick and the Unicorn. While explaining that there was no particular reason that he did not write a detailed background for Molly Grue's character, Peter S. Beagle stated that he has "always been grateful" to Grimes because she "brought such vocal life to the character that she covered things I didn't do." [ 3 ]

Robert Klein as The Butterfly, the creature that gives the Unicorn hints as to where to find the other unicorns.

Angela Lansbury as Mommy Fortuna, a witch who uses her illusory magic to run the Midnight Carnival, which showcases mythical creatures that are, in truth, just normal animals. Later, the harpy Celaeno, one of the two real mythical creatures, kills her and her henchman, Ruhk.

Christopher Lee as King Haggard, the ruler of a dreary kingdom who has never been happy, save for when he looks at unicorns. Beagle described Lee as "the last of the great 19th Century actors, and either the most-literate or second-most literate performer I've ever met." [ 4 ] When Lee came in to work, he brought his own copy of the novel wherein he took note of lines that he believed should not be omitted. [ 5 ] Lee, who is fluent in German. also voiced King Haggard in the German dub of the film.

Keenan Wynn as The Harpy Celaeno. a real harpy that was captured by Mommy Fortuna, freed by the Unicorn, and kills Mommy Fortuna and Ruhk out of vengeance for trapping her, the Unicorn and the other animals

Wynn also voices Captain Cully, the leader of a group of bandits.

Paul Frees as Mabruk, King Haggard's court magician who is replaced by Schmendrick.

Rene Auberjonois as the Skull that guards the clock that serves as an entryway into the Red Bull's lair. Beagle praised Auberjonois' performance, saying "he could have played any role in that movie and I would have been happy. He's that talented." [ 4 ]

Brother Theodore as Ruhk, a hunchback who works for Mommy Fortuna. He, along with Mommy Fortuna, is killed by the Harpy Celaeno.

Don Messick as the Cat that gives Molly Grue clues regarding the whereabouts of the Red Bull's lair.

Nellie Bellflower as the Tree that speaks and falls in love with Schmendrick after he accidentally casts the wrong spell on it.

Edward Peck as Jack Jingly, Cully's Men

Jack Lester as Hunter #1, Old Farmer, Cully's Men

Kenneth Jennings as Hunter #2, Cully's Men

Production [ edit ]

Peter S. Beagle stated that there had been interest in creating a film based on the book "early on". Those who expressed interest included Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez. though Beagle had been convinced by one of their partners' wives that they were "not good enough", and former 20th Century Fox animator Les Goldman. At the time, Beagle believed that "animated was the only way to go" with regard to the film, and had never thought of making it into a live-action film. Rankin/Bass had been the last studio that the film's associate producer, Michael Chase Walker, approached, and Beagle was "horrified" when he was informed that they had made a deal with Walker. Beagle stated that he has "…come to feel that the film is actually a good deal more than I had originally credited", and went on to say "There is some lovely design work – the Japanese artists who did the concepts and coloring were very good. And the voice actors do a superb job in bringing my characters to life…" [ 3 ]

While Rankin/Bass provided the film's dialogue and story based on Beagle's work, the animation was done by the studio Topcraft. The studio was later hired by Hayao Miyazaki to work on Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind . and their core members eventually went on to form Studio Ghibli. [ 6 ] According to Beagle, the final film ended up being "remarkably close" to his original script, although one scene at the end involving an encounter with a princess was "animated but eventually cut." The Invisible Pink Unicorn

About

The Invisible Pink Unicorn ( IPU ) is the goddess of a parody religion used to satirize theistic beliefs, taking the form of a unicorn that is paradoxically both invisible and pink. This makes her a rhetorical illustration used by atheists and other religious skeptics.

(Source: Wikipedia, see link)

Nowadays, the Invisible Pink Unicorn has become a metaphor to depict atheists, for it is some kind of spearhead that is used as an illustration of the problem faced by atheists when asked to disprove the existence of a god by those of a religious persuasion. Due to her invisibility, the existence of the IPU is impossible to disprove, and this is doubly so due to the fact that, according to some, only her believers can see her.

In brief, it’s a key-character to point at Religion’s paradoxical, as well as sometimes nonsensical, facts.

At the same time, it is a parody of religion similar to The Flying Spaghetti Monster .

Pre-internet era: Evolution of skepticism

The concept of using offbeat metaphors to point at religious somewhat oppressive ideas and to justify the right to be skeptic about their claims isn’t new.

In the mid-1950s, Bertrand Russell. British philosopher and mathematician, was one of the first to offer a theory called Russel’s teapot as an example to assert that it isn’t up to scientists to prove an inexistence.

Here is the complete text, entitled Is There a God? . according to wikipedia:

If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is an intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time

That idea of a celestial teapot. that would be reused in some contemporary works is believed to be the precursor that would be extrapoled in more straightforward parodies of Religions (including the Invisible Pink Unicorn).

Origin

The earliest known reference to an Invisible Pink Unicorn came from a 1990 Usenet group talk, in a channel called alt. atheism.

In it, someone created a topic about Proof of God’s existence (talk archived) to challenge atheist ideas.

While coming to the Christ’s ressurection subject, here’s the response he got:

Do you assert a resurrection? If so, support it with evidence. If you feel it

is the duty of others to refute the claim, and not of yourself to support it,

then how about refuting the existence of invisible pink unicorns?

(Bold added for emphasis)

Church of the Invisible Pink Unicorn

According to wikipedia and other articles. during the years 1994 – 1995, a group of college students wrote a manifesto, that is now believed to be lost, on the ISCA Telnet-based BBS containing the main roots of what will further be the IPU religion.

“Invisible Pink Unicorns are beings of great spiritual power. We know this because they are capable of being invisible and pink at the same time. Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can’t see them.” -- Steve Eley

You can find all the basics concerning IPU’s “Bible” in this 2007 article:

Unicorn Dreaming

The last time I dreamt of unicorns I was teetering at the edge of the precipice of great change. The unicorns that appeared in my meditations and dreams were not the stereotypical white unicorn now depicted commonly in fantasy art, they were sand coloured ponies with black mane and tail emerging out of the desert sand of Central Australia – my holiday destination for 2005. These unicorns were playful and beautiful, they wanted to be known and shared but only now have I been able to speak of them. They invited me to paint them, to create healing cards featuring them and share them in any way I could with others. What followed my unicorn dreaming was a challenging but complete transformation on every level of my being.

When I choose to write a blog post about unicorn dreaming in response to a question posted as a comment on a previous post I realised that yet again I was moving toward that precipice facing a quantum leap to great change. There are never any coincidences of course. The necessary change had already been set in motion by goals I myself had set. Invoking unicorns to write this post was simply another part of that universal energy flowing in to assist the transition of consciousness.

Within myth and legend it is said that unicorns have miraculous healing powers and an inner light so beautiful that it turned the hearts of men towards cruelty and greed to obtain it forcing the unicorn to retreat from the physical plane into the etheric realms. It is also said that only those with an open and pure heart and mind will ever see the unicorn appear physically. Throughout history much has been said about the form of the unicorn. It may appear in the form of a goat, deer, rhinocerous or oryx. It is said to have cloven hooves that may or may not be heart shaped. The horn may be etched with a spiral pattern and appear silver, opalescent or with rainbow hues. However it appears in your dreams is significant to you. If it appears as a deer or a horse, also look at the qualities of these animals as well.

The unicorn appears to us to assist our journey upon the path of truth. If we choose to follow, it will lead us upon a sacred quest deep into our inner world where it guides us beyond the fearful thoughts that we have made to the truth and light buried beneath. Only there may we reach our higher consciousness and connect to the etheric realm where the unicorn resides alongside the fairies and devas. While it guides us upon the path that we all must travel, it also shows us how the path can be unique and personal to us.

The unicorn embodies Divine purity and gentleness but also great power and healing. It can open even the most tightly closed heart. In the Beastaries of the World the unicorn is recorded as having 3 qualities.

* it cannot be captured – although it delights in you trying

* it has a great love of solitude

* it has an indomitable spirit

Unicorn is also said to appear to the mother of a special child, having appeared to the mother of Confucius and is often depicted in Christian art with the mother of Jesus. This special child lies dormant within each of us. When one follow the unicorn and discovers its gifts, one also discovers the gifts within self. The unicorn will accompany us through the challenges of change that we may give birth to the child that is The Light of The World.

Dating ultrasound

First Trimester / Dating Ultrasound

WHAT IS A FIRST TRIMESTER ULTRASOUND?

First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first 3-4 months of a pregnancy.

HOW IS THIS ULTRASOUND PERFORMED?

Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound.

For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small (at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only 5-9mm long) and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby. Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester. It will not harm you or your baby.

Transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. A small amount of ultrasound gel is put on the skin of the lower abdomen, with the ultrasound probe then scanning through this gel. The gel helps improve contact between the probe and your skin.

Transvaginal ultrasound is an internal ultrasound. It involves scanning with the ultrasound probe lying in the vagina. Transvaginal ultrasound usually produces better and clearer images of the female pelvic organs including the developing pregnancy, because the ultrasound probe lies closer to these structures.

The transvaginal ultrasound probe is thin, about 2cm diameter. The probe is covered with a disposable protective sheath. A small amount of ultrasound gel is placed on the end of this probe. The probe is then gently inserted a short distance into the vagina. All transvaginal probes have been cleaned and sterilised according to recommended protocols.

Performing the transvaginal ultrasound usually causes less discomfort than a pap smear. No analgesia is required for this ultrasound.

Your privacy will always be respected during your ultrasound, especially the transvaginal examination. You will have a large towel covering your lower body, in addition to wearing a gown during the transvaginal ultrasound.

You will always have a choice about whether transvaginal ultrasound is performed. If you have concerns about transvaginal ultrasound, please discuss this with your sonographer before your ultrasound begins.

DO I NEED A FULL BLADDER FOR THIS ULTRASOUND?

We usually get better images during transabdominal ultrasound if the bladder is partially filled, so to help your examination we ask you to drink water prior to the assessment. Please empty your bladder 1 hour before your appointment, drink 2 glasses of water and try not to empty your bladder again until after your appointment.

A full bladder moves bowel out from the pelvis into the abdomen, helping visualisation of the pregnancy, uterus and ovaries.

Your bladder should not be so full that it causes pain. If your bladder is very full and painful, you should empty a small amount so you are more comfortable.

You will be able to empty your bladder after the transabdominal ultrasound is completed and before the transvaginal ultrasound begins (if transvaginal ultrasound is required).

WHY WOULD I NEED A FIRST TRIMESTER/DATING ULTRASOUND?

Not all women need to have an ultrasound in this early part of the pregnancy.

Your doctor may request this ultrasound for a number of reasons, including:

Confirming the presence of your baby’s heartbeat. You may have gone to your doctor with vaginal bleeding or you may be anxious because of problems in a previous pregnancy (such as miscarriage). This ultrasound can routinely detect a heartbeat in your baby as early as 6-7 weeks.

Confirming the correct dates of your pregnancy. Some women are uncertain of their last menstrual period (LMP) or have irregular menstrual cycles, making it difficult for their doctor to correctly estimate when the baby is due. Establishing accurate dates can be important, especially if there are concerns about your baby later in the pregnancy (for example, if the baby is not growing well). An ultrasound in the first trimester can give an accurate estimated date of confinement (EDC) to within 3-5 days. Generally speaking, the earlier in your pregnancy the ultrasound is performed, the more accurate it will be at estimating your baby’s due date (technical factors such as the quality of the ultrasound image and the expertise of the sonographer will affect this accuracy).

Confirming the location of your pregnancy. Your doctor may have concerns that your pregnancy is located in the fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy). This ultrasound will check if your pregnancy is developing normally within the uterus.

Determining the number of babies present. Your doctor may be concerned about you having more than one baby (for example, twins or triplets) if your pregnancy was conceived with the help of clomiphene or IVF, you have a family history of twins, you have severe morning sickness or your uterus seems larger than expected. This ultrasound can determine the number of babies, as well as the type of twins.

Identifying pregnancies at increased risk of miscarriage or pregnancy loss. The first trimester ultrasound may detect changes in the early pregnancy that are concerning and associated with an increased risk of pregnancy loss (for example, the pregnancy sac is small or irregular, or the baby’s heart beat is much slower than expected) Such appearances may not always be significant for your baby, as we know that pregnancies with these changes may continue without problems over subsequent weeks.

Checking other pelvic organs. Your doctor may want an ultrasound to check other things in your pelvis apart from your pregnancy, such as the uterus (for example, if you have a history of fibroids) and the ovaries (for example, if you have pelvic pain and there is concern about an ovarian cyst).

Your doctor may be concerned about your pregnancy because of abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding. This early ultrasound can provide reassurance that everything is progressing normally. It may also detect a serious problem with either you or your pregnancy, some of which require further investigations or treatment.

Sometimes the results of a first trimester scan may be inconclusive or uncertain, and need to be combined with your clinical history and blood tests (serum BhCG).

Some women need to return for another ultrasound scan a few weeks later to assess the progress of the pregnancy, or they may require another blood test (serial serum BhCG).

Your doctor will discuss the reasons for such follow-up, if this is necessary.

We realise this is often an anxious time for parents, while they wait for the next ultrasound to check on their baby. We will do our best to answer your questions and minimise your anxiety.

WHAT WILL USUALLY BE CHECKED AT A FIRST TRIMESTER ULTRASOUND?

A first trimester ultrasound will usually include each of the following components however some ultrasounds may focus more on particular areas.

Your ultrasound is always performed in the context of your clinical history and the results of previous ultrasounds and investigations.

Assess the size of your baby. The baby is measured from one end to the other (crown-rump-length, or CRL).

Assess the location of the pregnancy. The pregnancy normally develops in the uterus, within the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). Sometimes a pregnancy may not be developing in the correct place (an ectopic pregnancy). The most common location for an ectopic pregnancy is the fallopian tube.

Assess the gestation sac. The baby is growing inside a small sac, called the gestation sac. The size and appearance of this sac will be assessed.

Assess the number of babies.

Assess the baby’s heartbeat. We will confirm the presence of a heartbeat in your baby and measure the heart rate. The heart rate of babies is much quicker than adults.

Assess the uterus and ovaries. We will review the uterus for such conditions as fibroids, and the ovaries for such conditions as ovarian cysts.

WHAT WILL MY BABY LOOK LIKE AT THE FIRST TRIMESTER ULTRASOUND?

Your baby will change dramatically in appearance during this early part of the pregnancy.

Before 5 weeks gestation, the developing pregnancy is too small to detect on ultrasound. The endometrium (the lining of the uterus where the pregnancy will grow) should appear thick and secretory. One of the ovaries will have an ovulation cyst called a haemorrhagic corpus luteum. This ovarian cyst is a normal part of getting pregnant, as the egg forming your baby was released from this cyst. The corpus luteum will gradually resolve (get smaller) as the pregnancy continues.

At 5-6 weeks gestation, a small gestation (pregnancy) sac is seen within the uterus. A transvaginal ultrasound is usually required to see the baby at this stage of the pregnancy. Your baby is just a tiny embryo. Although the ultrasound may see your baby, it measures only a few millimetres long, and it is too early to always detect the baby’s heartbeat. You should not be concerned if we cannot see the baby’s heartbeat at this early stage, as this can be normal. The yolk sac is the other structure that is usually identified at this early stage. The yolk sac lies within the gestation sac and looks like a little round circle inside the pregnancy sac. Seeing a yolk sac helps the doctor confirm the presence of a developing pregnancy within the uterus, even before the embryo is seen. This is useful if there are concerns that your pregnancy may not be correctly located in the uterus (an ectopic pregnancy).

At 6-7 weeks gestation, your baby is growing bigger and now measures 5-9mm long. From now until the end of the first trimester, the embryo will be measured from one end to the other, called the crown-rump-length or CRL. The baby’s heartbeat will be detected at this stage.

At 8-11 weeks gestation, your baby continues to change appearance as it grows and develops. By 8 weeks gestation, your baby can usually be seen with transabdominal ultrasound.

By 10-11 weeks gestation, the embryo is clearly recognisable as a baby with a body, head, arms and legs, as well as many other identifiable features. Your baby may be moving around the pregnancy sac. Many parents are amazed at the detail that can be seen even at this early stage of the pregnancy.

Accuracy of Transvaginal Ultrasound for Dating Pregnancy

Last Updated: Mar 13, 2011 | By Suzanne Robin

Transvaginal ultrasound is the most accurate way to date an early pregnancy. Photo Credit control panel of ultrasound scanner image by starush from Fotolia. com

Before the advent of routine ultrasound in pregnancy, medical personnel estimated a baby's due date by the date of the last menstrual period and by feeling the uterus and determining the size to see if it matched the given due date. With transvaginal ultrasound, checking for embryonic development known to occur within a certain time frame more accurately dates a pregnancy. Transvaginal ultrasound can see embryonic development about a week before transabdominal ultrasound, the American Pregnancy Association (APA) states.

Gestational Sac

Fetal Pole

By 6 to 7 weeks, it's usually possibly to see the fetal pole, the earlier sign of the developing embryo, within the gestational sac on transvaginal ultrasound. If the gestational sac reaches 16 to 18 millimeters and no fetal pole is seen, the pregnancy may be abnormal, according to the APA. Once the fetal pole is seen, the crown-rump length (CRL) of the embryo can be measured. The CRL is extremely accurate, Dr. Woo says. Later measurements that don't reflect the date given by an early CRL means the pregnancy isn't growing normally, not that the early CRL was wrong.

Fetal Heartbeat

Reliability

Early transvaginal ultrasound, the most reliable way to determine a pregnancy due date, can date a pregnancy within a few days and is more accurate than determining a due date by the date of the last menstrual period.

A look at what your ultrasounds will involve.

Having an ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy can be a thrilling experience. It's wonderful to see a little blob with a heartbeat that will become your baby.

But ultrasounds can also lift the lid on a few worries you might be having. What if they can't see the heartbeat? What if it's smaller than it should be? Is there a problem? Bear in mind that you may need a second ultrasound before you know for certain if all is well.

When will I have my first ultrasound?

If you are unsure of the first day of your last period you will be offered a dating ultrasound when you are between 10 and 14 weeks pregnant (SOGC 2003).

Can the dating ultrasound tell exactly how many weeks pregnant I am?

The main reason for the ultrasound is to work out how many weeks pregnant you are, and to estimate your due date. The length of your pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), even though you don't actually conceive until 14 days after your LMP, and later than this if your cycle is longer than 28 days.

The LMP is used because most women know when their last period was, but may not know when they actually conceived. If you do know the conception date, this is classed as day 14 and not day one.

If you have an irregular cycle, or if you've recently been taking the contraceptive pill, working out the date from your LMP isn't a very accurate method. Ultrasounds are more accurate than using the LMP (Bottomley et al 2009) and, if the ultrasound date differs from your period dates, the ultrasound date will be used.

The ultrasound date is usually later than the period date, so accurate dating has been found to reduce the number of women having labour induced because their babies are overdue (LeFevre et al 1993, NICE 2008). It may also help you avoid feeling disappointed when your baby is "late" (Westfall & Benoit 2004).

What else will the dating ultrasound reveal?

The ultrasound can check that your baby has a heartbeat and is developing normally. Your baby's head, limbs, hands and feet, and some organs can be seen, and - though looking for abnormalities isn't the purpose of the ultrasound - some major problems can be seen at this early stage. You should still have a ultrasound between 18 and 22 weeks because more detail can be seen as your baby grows bigger.

The dating ultrasound will also show if you're expecting twins, triplets or more. It's helpful to know about twins early on, as it's easier to see whether or not they share a placenta. Finding out about having twins early in pregnancy also gives you more time to prepare for the birth and for your doctor or midwife to plan your care.

Knowing about twins early is also useful if you want to have screening for Down's syndrome. This is because blood tests for Down's syndrome are not very accurate if you are having more than one baby. Instead, you will be offered a nuchal translucency ultrasound. This measures a collection of fluid under the skin at the back of a baby's neck.

What happens during the ultrasound?

The ultrasound will take about five to 10 minutes. Nearly all ultrasound after 10 weeks can be done through your tummy, and most units ask you to come with a full bladder. The sonographer will put some gel on your tummy and will move a small hand-held device, called a transducer, over your skin to get views of your baby.

If your uterus is very deep in the pelvis or if you're overweight, you may be offered a vaginal ultrasound. which can get nearer to your baby. It shouldn't be uncomfortable, and a big advantage is that you don't need a full bladder.

The report from the ultrasound will be sent to your caregiver. It will tell you exactly how many weeks pregnant you are.

How big will my baby be at the dating ultrasound?

Your baby is measured from head to bottom. This measurement, known as the crown rump length, is very accurate in the first trimester. After 13 weeks your baby can curl up and stretch out, so measuring the length becomes less accurate. Then the circumference of the head becomes the best way to measure your baby (NICE 2008) :

At 10 weeks, your baby measures 3cm

At 12 weeks, he measures 5cm to 6cm

At 13 weeks, he measures 7cm

Can I have a nuchal ultrasound at the same time as the dating ultrasound?

Nuchal translucency can be measured from 11 to 14 weeks to estimate the risk of Down's syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. Read more about screening for Down's syndrome.

Some hospitals offer a nuchal translucency ultrasound to all women at 11 to 14 weeks, but this isn't available everywhere.

Are there any disadvantages to having an ultrasound?

Sometimes having an ultrasound can cause unnecessary worry. It may show a very minor problem, or something which may get better on its own.

As with all screening tests, there can be false positive and false negative results. For example, about one in 20 women will appear to be at high risk from the nuchal translucency ultrasound to assess the risk of Down's syndrome, but most of these babies will turn out not to have Down's syndrome. It's up to you whether you have an ultrasound - you don't have to if you don't want to. If you're not sure, talk to your midwife. Read more about ultrasounds and safety .

Dating the Beginning of Pregnancy

One of the most important aspects of obstetrical care is to date, as precisely as possible, the beginning of pregnancy so that the estimated time of arrival (ETA) can be calculated (sometimes referred to as the estimated date of confinement – EDC). The standard textbook of obstetrics, Williams Obstetrics . states vigorously that “precise knowledge of the age of the fetus is imperative for ideal obstetrical management!” (emphasis in the original). And yet, even with all of the available technology, one of the puzzles of modern obstetrics, is that the obstetrician has not yet learned how to accurately date the beginning of a pregnancy.

Pregnancy can be measured in two different ways. The most common and most often used in clinical obstetrics is the measurement of the gestational age of the pregnancy. The gestational age of the pregnancy is measured from the first day of the last menstrual period. In this way of dating the pregnancy, the pregnancy is 40 weeks in duration (on average) instead of the actual 38 weeks . In other words, it dates the pregnancy, on average, two weeks longer than it is.

The other way of measuring the dates of the pregnancy is to measure the fetal age . The fetal age of the pregnancy is measured from the time of conception or the estimated time of conception (ETC) . When measuring the pregnancy in this fashion, it will be 38 weeks long or two weeks shorter than the gestational age dates. The fetal age, of course, is the actual age of the pregnancy.

Historically, the obstetrician has focused on the first day of the last menstrual period for two reasons. First of all, the menstrual flow itself is a fairly dramatic symptom which the woman can be expected to remember. In addition, it is easy to teach her to record the first day of the last menstrual period so that when that information is elicited by the physician, at a later time, it is available.

However, in the midst of all of this, the obstetrician and many women have missed the point that the cervical mucus discharge is very much a flow in the same fashion as the menstrual flow. In some countries, they refer to menstruation as the red flow and the mucus discharge as the white flow . Unfortunately, modern obstetrics has paid little attention to the white flow .

When one is charting the Creighton Model Fertility Care ™ System (CrMS), however, one can date the pregnancy accurately from the actual or estimated time of conception. Therefore, one can date the pregnancy according to its true date (or true beginning ) or in fetal age terms. This is measured by evaluating the acts of intercourse that occur during the time of fertility and establishing an estimated time of conception through this approach.

We have studied 173 patients in a consecutive fashion who have been charting the CrMS at the time of conception. The ETC and the ETA were calculated. In this group of patients, early ultrasound dating of the pregnancy was also obtained. In Table 53-3, the results of that evaluation are shown. An accurate date for the beginning of pregnancy can be established with the use of the CrMS. This correlates well with the ultrasound dates and the estimated due date or ETA. In fact, the CrMS dating correlated, on average, in the following way: CrMS ETA = U/S, ETA + 1.97 days. The CrMS dates were highly accurate with the two being within 10 days of each other in 100 percent of the cases.

An example of this dating is shown in Figure 53-3. Here, a pregnancy occurring in a longer cycle where the Peak Day occurred on Day 26 of the cycle is shown. If this pregnancy is calculated in the traditional fashion, there will be a 12-day discrepancy between the dates as customarily calculated from the last menstrual period and the actual date of the pregnancy which is calculated from the Peak Day. The Peak Day, of course, will be much more accurate.

Dating ukrainian women

08.05.2014. In the beginning of 2000s an Israeli producer Nili Tal shot a film about ‘Ukrainian brides’ in search of which Israeli men, desperate in their love search came for. And now this story is continued…

25.04.2014. Everybody has long ego become accustomed to the fact that Slavic girls emerge more and more often on international beauty contests. And they don’t just participate, they win. Youth and charm, attractiveness and sexuality – that is how they are characterized by spectators and members of a jury. More details .

A meaning of the word ‘bride’ in the majority of the world’s languages anyway means ‘being sent’. It means an intended one. But in the English word ‘bride’ linguists see a root of a Teutonic word ‘to cook’. It is less romantic, but it sounds quite logical for men’s ears. ;)

Slavic languages offer a more romantic interpretation of a word ‘bride’ – an ‘unknown one’, that points at an ancient Slavic tradition when a bridegroom could see a girl only after a ceremony, as a wife already.

How does a bride sound in other languages? In Ukrainian it is narechena, English – bride, French – fiancee, German – Braut, Italian ¬– fidanzata, sposa, Latin – destinata, Spanish – novia, prometida, Turkish – gelin. Latin ‘destinata’ sounds as ‘fateful’ as possible. A girl, as a fate destined for a man, his second half.

A site is a place of meeting and acquaintance for lonely Ukrainian women and men from Europe, the USA, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand. Our dating service is a possibility of exchange of electronic information, mail, photos, communication in video chat, delivery of gifts and organization of Romantic tours.

Women of Ukraine were always famous for their beauty but it was not their only advantage. Against all the odds our beauties always showed such strong character traits as motivation, perseverance, persistence. Neither national crisis of the 90ies nor constant political battles could break the will of Ukrainian women. Every of them kept on living despite of anything, reached their aims, and, at the same time, didn’t forget to stay the same charming, agreeable, smiling girl young inside.

Sometimes one just wonders how at such a hard time Ukrainians manage to be perfect wives, mothers, successful businesswomen, kind landladies and just magic creatures who make our world beautiful and make men’s hearts race madly.

Every man wishes to see as a wife a beautiful, tender, affectionate, loving, hot Russian woman who doesn’t impinge on his freedom. It is no secret for anybody that a feminine population of Russia is more numerous than a masculine one. It means that there are statistically nine guys for ten girls. Read more

‘Romantic tours’ are very popular in the whole world: British and Americans, Germans and Italians, men from France and Spain, Australians and Arabs pay much money to dating agencies for them to find them a partner in the country. Why specially in Ukraine?

Ukrainian women talk about themselves!

There are so many reviews we hear about Ukrainian women and girls. Most of these review make western men, Ukrainian men, women from other countries. Would you like to hear something that girls and women from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Belarus say about themselves? Without a doubt, it is interesting to know, although. it is hardly going to be something different, because the truth is impossible to spoil.

As the most important factor of Ukrainian looks, women and girls from Ukraine. Russia, Moldova, Belarus mention their beautiful appearance (20 % of all sayings that were found online). Charm, attractiveness, femininity, beauty are mentioned too. "Ukrainian women are the most beautiful!"; "They attract men by their appearance and inner beauty" ; "men make legends about us" but what differs our russian girls from others is our desire to be attractive!" Just a few percents lagged our soul features (17%) among which there are kindness, trustfulness, care, reliability, devotion, patience and absence of mercenaries. These characteristics are extremely important for the family. On the whole family is still the main value for a Ukrainian woman. Women and girls from Ukraine. Russia, Moldova. Belarus accept family is the main factor in their life, they put it above all the other values. They are always ready to scarify their career in order to be with their husband and children" Girls from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Belarus say, "We have kind hearts. IF we get married, we devote our lives to the men that we love" Ukrainian woman is so natural in accepting her husband's behavior and his way of living. It doesn't mean that she doesn’t try to influence him. She just doesn't try to refuse it. She is always supports her husband. On the other hand, "care about her children is one the most important things in lives of ukrainian brides. women from Russia, Moldova, Belarus!"

Intellectual and spiritual field can be found in 10% of all the sayings, which tell us about the mismatch of their abilities with the stereotypes of the society(both western and Ukrainian men estimate the intellect of brides from Russia. Moldova, Belarus low) We can emphasize the creativity, education, great desire to learn, self-perfection, immateriality etc. That's why we can't say that Ukrainian women are women "with low self-respect and self-rating". Some people consider Ukrainian women having low education only because of the stereotypes. D ating World, is a Russian marriage agency and online dating service for single Russian women and Russian girls. We have been working in the international dating industry since 2002, we have helped hundreds of men from Europe, Australia, USA, Middle East, Canada, Japan and South America met their Ukrainian and Russian wives.

We are pleased to inform you that our agency is fully compliant with IMBRA (the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act) law, unlike many other dating sites featuring Russian brides.

Some men ask us about what are all these beautiful Russian women doing here? What makes Russian brides search for foreign husbands on dating services? Why single Russian girls want foreign soul mates for marriage? Can't these women find partners in Russia? Our answers to all these questions is No, they can't! Russia and Ukraine has always suffered from a shortage of men relative to the number of women.

We don't sell a single address for money. Being a member you get access to the whole database of Ukrainian and Russian women who are looking for marriage. We don’t offer you an email forwarding service or a website based mailing system. Our men members are able to get in direct contact and can access all the ladies personal contact details (emails, phone numbers, postal addresses, Skype and ICQ numbers). Also note Dating world does not exchange profiles of women with other agencies. Most women have been interviewed personally in our representative offices. We have a professional team of 31 people in 23 offices in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Moldova. Important note: Though most of our women have their phone numbers available and if you decided to join we strongly recommend you not call any woman before initial correspondence (email exchange). You should also ask for her permission before calling her.

Keep in mind we are completely different from agencies which do not allow men to get direct contact details from women during correspondence or those that charge their members for writing every email and for reading every message no matter what is written there. Moreover, all the correspondence is closely monitored by these sites operators. This is a never ending course because their system is that men can not receive personal contact information even if the ladies wish to give them.

Our women are real people, and they seek real love and relationships based on mutual understanding and respect. All Russian brides shown on our website are marriage minded and available for correspondence. We will give you the opportunity to meet and to establish relationships with the most beautiful, lovely, sexy and intelligent women in the world. Remember there are millions of attractive, sweet and well educated young women in the former USSR (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan), who are seeking a better life with loving men in the West.

To build any relationships especially with a woman that lives in another country which is thousands miles away from you is not a simple. And patience is very important in it. Sometimes difficult situations and misunderstandings happen. You should understand that it is normal and everything will settle down in a short while. Language barrier is easy to overcome, especially if you are going to be patient and willing to help your Russian woman. Remember it takes time to develop any successful relationship.

If you know you’re going to be married to someone out of your culture. there are a few things to think about. Primarily, don’t do it just because it seems like it would be fun and great. It looks great from the outside, but that wow factor quickly gets old. A successful intercultural for example Russian-Spanish marriage is great, but not because of what it looks like from the outside. It’s because of how much work and time it took to overcome the obstacles to successfully communicate and understand each other well.

Russian and Ukrainian culture and mentality is different, and you need to make sure you know it before getting into a relationship with a beautiful Russian woman or a sexy Ukrainian woman. It will save you time, money, headaches and possibly a broken heart as well.

In few words, dating Russian women is a lovely emotional adventure, especially if you are ready to explore all the Russian traditions in which you will be involved in. The dream of dating Ukrainian and Belarus women can come true for those who are careful, pay attention to the customs, and those men who have courtesy towards the woman, and her family. But remember attractive and single Russian women make great wives, but they are far from perfect. They are humans, so they have their demerits and just like any other marriage, marriage with a Russian woman requires work.

Russian women seeking marriage are not very different from other women around the world when it comes to what they really want from men. They want a true love and respect. Many young Ukrainian girls dream of starting a family with a husband who is committed to the family. Some females are divorced and have children and want to find a deep emotional feeling and tenderness once more.

If you are interested in a Russian woman, at least be clever enough and choose a Russian girl who will match your life interests and your age. Don't believe the advertisements that say young Russian girls are ready to marry men much, much older than they are. This is untrue. Keep the age difference to a respectable maybe 10-15 years. This range is quite ordinary in Ukraine and Russia, but any more than this and you are just asking for problems.

If you are wary about Ukrainian and Russian women dating sites or have had bad luck with them in the past, we understand your distrust. Some Russian dating agencies (particularly free dating sites) have gotten a bad reputation from a few dishonest and fly-by-night operations. There are many dating sites and free Russian women personals services offering you the most gorgeous, model-quality and sexy single girls but not all are what they seem.

Be aware of those singles free dating sites offering addresses for free. It costs a significant amount of money to operate an agency and a dating website. These sites do not go to the trouble and expense of finding and checking all the single women they publish.

Many articles have been written in newspapers, TV documentaries made about the rip-offs involved with these sites, different scams operated by (Russian women) and the traps awaiting the unsuspecting men who might lose their hearts and a lot of money when chasing their dream.

Don not be put off and focus on the negative put it in perspective. The truth is that there are thousands of successful marriages and a lot of examples of happy stories every year compared to the disappointments. The main rule is to believe in success and happy end.

The term Russian mail order bride refers to a Ukrainian, Russian and Belarus woman who wishes to find a man from a foreign country via email and dating services in order to marry him. At first, this term was used by news media to refer to foreign women who met men and married them after coming to their countries as their brides. But do not be misled by the term mail order brides. Sincere women looking for families are not mail order merchandise you can order on the Internet. There are many websites that are famous for providing information on Russian brides. These sites give you an impression that Russian women are desperate to meet foreigners and at times can lead to a rather negative impression about Russian women.

Most of our ladies are highly educated and many work as professionals. The women we represent have high moral and family values. It is important to understand that they are not (selling themselves) but seek suitable partners but you must be ready to work hard to win her heart. Make sure you treat the Russian women with respect like you would with any other women in your country. If you do not, you would wish you had never met a Russian woman!

At our introduction service you will find women personals with photos of single and honest Russian and Ukrainian women seeking men and soul mates of all ages, for love, romance and marriage worldwide you will also find some useful information and articles about Russian and Ukrainian brides and important correspondence advices.

We update our database regularly and submit up to 25 new profiles every week, and all female members are asked to inform us when they no longer consider themselves available so we could cancel their listing. Every week we receive 10-20 requests from women to remove their contact details because they have found somebody they like.

Each lady has a photo along with her personal information. so please feel free to browse the site to have an idea of the type of women you could meet and let us help you to find that perfect life partner.

If you are not convinced about yourself that this is for you, then don’t start dating or contacting Russian women for marriage. Russian women in our agency have already prepared themselves before they decided to join our dating site to meet serious looking single men from all over the world.

Remember once you have established a connection with a Russian woman and are thinking of marriage, things get complicated. You need to be prepared ahead of time by looking up the legal requirements of getting a woman from Russia into your own country.
