Dating

Dating is a part of human mating process whereby two people meet socially for companionship. beyond the level of friendship. or with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or marriage. It can be a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by the couple. While the term has several meanings, it usually refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity in public, together, as a couple.

History [ edit ]

Dating as an institution is a relatively recent phenomenon which has mainly emerged in the last few centuries. From the standpoint of anthropology and sociology. dating is linked with other institutions such as marriage and the family which have also been changing rapidly and which have been subject to many forces, including advances in technology and medicine. As humans have evolved from hunter-gatherers into civilized societies and more recently into modern societies, there have been substantial changes in the relationship between men and women, with perhaps the only biological constant being that both adult women and men must have sexual intercourse for human procreation to happen. [ 3 ]

Humans have been compared to other species in terms of sexual behavior. Neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky constructed a reproductive spectrum with opposite poles being tournament species. in which males compete fiercely for reproductive privileges with females, and pair bond arrangements, in which a male and female will bond for life. [ 4 ] According to Sapolsky, humans are somewhat in the middle of this spectrum, in the sense that humans form pair bonds, but there is the possibility of cheating or changing partners. [ 4 ] These species-particular behavior patterns provide a context for aspects of human reproduction. including dating. However, one particularity of the human species is that pair bonds are often formed without necessarily having the intention of reproduction. In modern times, emphasis on the institution of marriage, generally described as a male-female bond, has obscured pair bonds formed by same-sex and transsexual couples, and that many heterosexual couples also bond for life without offspring, or that often pairs that do have offspring separate. Thus, the concept of marriage is changing widely in many countries.

Historically, marriages in most societies were arranged by parents and older relatives with the goal not being love but legacy and "economic stability and political alliances", according to anthropologists. [ 5 ] Accordingly, there was little need for a temporary trial period such as dating before a permanent community-recognized union was formed between a man and a woman. While pair-bonds of varying forms were recognized by most societies as acceptable social arrangements, marriage was reserved for heterosexual pairings and had a transactional nature, where wives were in many cases a form of property being exchanged between father and husband, and who would have to serve the function of reproduction. Communities exerted pressure on people to form pair-bonds in places such as Europe ; in China. according to sociologist Tang Can, society "demanded people get married before having a sexual relationship" [ 6 ] and many societies found that some formally recognized bond between a man and a woman was the best way of rearing and educating children as well as helping to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings regarding competition for mates.

Different dating services call them handles, nicknames or just usernames, but they all mean the same thing. Your username is the identity you project to the world of online dating sites and the secret to a great username is to not make a bad one!

A lot of people don't think the screen name is important. It really is. Your screen name, your tagline, and a thumbnail picture are all going to combine to give other members their first impression of you. Once the first impression is made, you can't go back in time and change it, and simply put, it could make the difference between potential cyber-suitors clicking on your profile name and viewing your ad or moving on to the next one – trust me.

Remember - you are trying to create the impression that you are a confident, social, fun, and passionate individual that is not obviously trying to convey these characteristics. You want to do your very best to make as much of an impact on your first impression as you can. Simply put, with your screen name you are trying to build interest.

When it comes to your profile name you should choose something that is:

Concise

Descriptive

Relatively short

Preferably easy to pronounce

Attention grabbing

However coming up with a great of even a good screen name requires thought to serve as your online identity is not that easy.

Avoid using your full name. You could use your first name with some numbers after it. Something that shows you're romantic or have a sense of humor would work if these are the qualities you possess and want to project.

A common mistake is trying too hard to sound sexy and instead just sounding like the kind of person who frequents sex chat rooms. It is best to avoid overtly sexual connotations or racy language in your username and online profile as it may attract the wrong kind of people, oh unless you are registering with a specialist introduction site or only looking for sexual liaisons.

Note: guys anything that involves reference to size, muscles or bad behavior is usually a turn off and for women reference to shape or even hair color may lead to generalizations and assumptions which you may prefer to avoid. If you are looking for serious dates with the possibility of long term relationship, this may turn off prospective partners. If you decide to use a suggestive handle, and especially if you don’t, be careful that you don’t unintentionally create a double entendre.

Another important tip is to avoid using negative feelings or state of mind like "depressed" or "lonely" in your username. Such names imply that you are carrying some heavy emotional baggage and will not attract fun loving and lively individuals.

Another great way of showing your personality through your online dating username is to include some personal information in a word or two. You can incorporate your hobby or interest in an adorable manner to come up with a unique yet attractive username like "Deep Sea Diva Jane" or "Risky Racer Aaron". Incorporating your hobby in your profile name will help you attract dates that have similar interests.

It is advisable to choose a screen name that is NOT related to your real name or e-mail address in the interest of Anonymity. You must avoid at all costs including personal information like your exact date of birth or your house number in your online dating username. Dubious characters are always looking to collate such personal information and then misusing the identity of hapless victims.

Another way to make it meaningful Is to create a handle that contains a slightly obscure reference or Inside joke. For example, "Feathers Mc Graw " could be a handle for someone who loves the Wallace arid Grommet animated films. People who have seen ‘The Wrong Trousers’ the film in which this character appears, would get the reference immediately. A side benefit to choosing a handle this way is that it can often start a conversation when people ask you what your handle refers to.

Therefore if you want a great online dating user name which sets you apart from the rest of the crowd, just follow these surefire tips:

RESEARCH:

Spend time viewing other user names and see which ones appeal to you and which do not. Don’t just look of profiles of your gender, look at your opposite gender too and see what makes you want to read more. Research what looks good and what doesn’t. Find out what you like and don’t like. Emulate the ones you like. This will give you ideas for what works and what doesn’t.

SHORT AND SWEET:

Keep your name as short as possible. Find out the maximum visible length allowed. Some online dating sites will allow a user name to be perhaps fifteen characters, but they may only display the first twelve.

WHO AM I:

Tell people something about yourself? Your screen name is a small window into your soul. Tell people who you are, what you love, what ideals you hold dear, what your interests are. If you are passionate about golf, try something like “Golf Diva”

IF YOU FIRST DON’T SUCCEED:

Great Usernames are Usually Puns or Plays on Words

As someone who has been an online dating coach since 2003, I’d venture to guess that I’ve not only seen more usernames than just about anyone on the planet, but I’ve written more of them as well.

Why do I think that usernames make a difference, when everyone knows that it’s all about the profile and photo?

Because when you’re dating online, which is an extremely competitive medium, you need every advantage you can get.

A great username is a differentiator – a unique brand name – something that completely sets you apart from every other person on a dating site. And when your ideal partner is scrolling through hundreds of names – Sally102, JenNYC1, LawyerGal – a great username can be the very reason that someone contacts you.

Most people take one of two wrong tacks when coming up with an online dating username:

1) Putting ZERO thought into it: Bill10247, ClaireT, AllyCat

2) Putting minimal thought into it, using a literal description: TallDoctor, GorgeousGoddess, Fun2BeAround

The problem with these efforts, of course, is not that they’re “bad”, but rather that they’re BORING. There’s nothing unique, memorable or distinguishing. There’s nothing that evokes a smile. And so the names fall flat. And you become convinced that usernames don’t matter.

They do if you are clever about it.

In my opinion, a username should be a pun or a play on words. Something familiar-sounding, with a twist.

WineNot – for the wine aficionado

LadyGoGo – for the world traveler

BachToBach – for the classical music enthusiast

TenderLegal – for the soft-hearted lawyer

See the common thread? All of them are plays off of real names, idioms or catchphrases, which is why they evoke smiles from readers.

One of my favorite usernames was TheGooseWhisperer, written for a client named Bobbi in 2005. Bobbi had a farm with geese in the yard and instead of using TheHorseWhisperer, which was way too overdone, we changed one word to great effect. Dozens of people commented on it.

One of them turned out to be her future husband.

So if you’re wondering how to come up with a clever name that gets attention, and attracts a like-minded person with a great sense of humor, I have an exercise that can help you come up with usernames just like the ones I mention above.

It’s in Volume 2 of my Finding the One Online audio series, and is the cherry on top of your new online dating experience. In Finding the One Online, I give you 7 hours of audio, a 180 page transcript, a 35 page workbook – and tips on everything from choosing the right site, to writing a compelling online dating profile, to taking the right photos, to flirting effectively via email so that every single person will want to meet you in person.

What’s the most memorable username you’ve ever seen on a dating site? I’m quite sure our readers are not going to copy them for their own personal usage. Right, readers?
