Censor Seal Variations Over Time

Broadly speaking, the general form (i. e. number, contents, shape, etc) of the censor seals used in the period from 1790 to 1876 (during which woodblock prints were censored) falls into six main periods. Within each of these periods, the exact form of the seals (i. e. square, round, oval, etc) often changed; this level of detail is only useful for actually dating prints.

The sections below give a mostly-complete introduction to how the censor seals changed over time; the early period is not covered in detail, as prints from that period are rare, unlike those from the later periods coverered here. (Also not covered here are certain obscure censor seals used for special forms, e. g. fan prints.)

First Period

In the first, lasting from 1790 until 1805, a single round seal reading kiwame ("approved") is found (see sample illustration at right).

Model Who Appeared On ‘Dating Naked’ Sues After Censor Fails

Jessie Nizewitz, a 28-year-old runway model, is suing producers of VH1′s “Dating Naked” reality show because she said they failed to blur out a shot of her naked, a fairly predictable result when you star on a show called “Dating Naked.”

The New York Post reports that Nizewitz said producers “repeatedly” promised her that all private parts would be censored. They weren’t and now she is suing for $10 million.

The third episode aired July 31, and during it Nizewitz strips down and covers her body in sand while on her date. The lawsuit says producers egged her on.

“I felt lied to, manipulated and used. I was horrified.”

She said when the episode aired, she was bombarded with jokes on social media about her “money shot,” and that even her grandmother saw it.

“She’s probably mad,” Nisewitz said.

Nizewitz, who is an inspiring model from Long Island, New York, said she was assured by producers that all of her private areas would be blurred out during the episode. She claims after the uncensored footage aired, she was insulted and embarrassed on social media.

The images were reportedly shared on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr after airing on VH1.

"Although I went on this show knowing that I would be nude while taping it, I was told that my private parts would be blurred for TV," Nizewitz said in a statement. "If you watch an episode, you will see that the blur actually makes it less revealing than a bikini would. Obviously, I did not expect the world to see my private parts, this is not what I anticipated or what any other contestants on the show anticipated."

Nizewitz told the New York Post that she felt "lied to, manipulated and used," along with feeling "horrified." She also claims that the man she was dating stopped calling her after the episode aired.

"I immediately started getting text messages," she told the Post. "Everyone saw it. One of the messages read, 'So your money shot is on cable TV.' My grandma saw it. I saw her this week and she didn't have much to say to me. She's probably mad. My parents are just annoyed."

According to Entertainment Weekly. the lawsuit stated, "Plaintiff. was shocked, horrified and outraged to observe this intrusion into her privacy for all to see. Immediately Plaintiff became subject to ridicule by those watching. Plaintiff has suffered and continues to suffer extreme emotional distress, mental anguish, humiliation and embarrassment. Defendants knew or reasonably should have known that broadcasting an individual's vagina and anus on national cable television would cause substantial and severe emotional distress."

"Dating Naked," which premiered on July 17, follows one male and one female who go out on several dates fully nude. At the end of the episode, both contestants choose whether they would like to see one another again.

The show typically censors the private parts of both contestants, but typically bares their buttocks. "Dating Naked" has been slammed by Parents Television Council for putting nudity on cable.

‘Dating Naked’ Cast Member Suing After Censor Fail, Says She Was Too Naked

Dating Naked is a new breakout series on VH1, and while many are amused by the show, one cast member is not. Jessie Nizewitz is suing the network’s operator Viacom and two production companies for $10 million because she was “too naked” on her episode.

For those who haven’t seen the VH1 show, Dating Naked . the whole concept of the show is, well, dating naked. Two individuals, a man and woman, are sent to paradise to date naked because they claim they’ve tried every other form of dating and have come up empty.

The idea behind dating naked is that with no clothes, there are no barriers and therefore a “real” connection can possibly be formed. The two individuals first go on a date with each other, and then they each go on two more dates. By the end of the show, the original daters are asked to pick who they would like to continue dating, and that’s about it! While the show is all about being dating naked, cast members are guaranteed to have all their naughty bits blurred out.

According to E! News . Nizewits, a 28-year-old New York model filed the lawsuit Wednesday because she says all her naughty bits weren’t properly blurred out during her episode on Dating Naked . Entertainment Weekly went on to say that Nizewits claimed that VH1 flashed her crotch during one segment where she was playfully wrestling with her date, and after viewers noticed the blur malfunction, she says she endured jokes on social media at her expense:

“Plantiff… was shocked, horrified and outraged to observe this intrusion into her privacy for all to see,” reads the suit filed by attorney Matthew J. Blit in New York on Wednesday. “Immediately Plaintiff became subject to ridicule by those watching … Plaintiff has suffered and continues to suffer extreme emotional distress, mental anguish, humiliation and embarrassment…”

While Dating Naked does show nude backsides, they do make sure that breasts and genitals are significantly blurred out. Nizewits even admit that the blurs often show less then wearing a bikini:

“If you watch an episode, you will see that the blur actually makes it less revealing than a bikini would.”

While Nizewits has noted in a statement that she knew she would be naked on the show, she says that she wasn’t expecting the whole world to see her privates:

“Obviously, I did not expect the world to see my private parts, this is not what I anticipated or what any other contestants on the show anticipated.”

UPDATE: It was an AGGRESSIVE crotch blur fail exposing not only her vagina but her butthole too. Still doesn’t change the principal that she’s a hypocrite but I will say the circumstances are a little bit different when your asshole is exposed.
